“How to turn OFF the Government’s ‘armageddon’ emergency alert”

The title is partially the Daily Mail’s, as attested to by its sensationalist idiocy. It would continue “…that is set to sound on every smartphone in the UK at 3pm this Sunday”, but the reader probably already knows about the UK Government’s test mass intrusion to take place on 23rd April. Anyway, as the title comes from the said source, so does the graphic below, and the information contained within. This site merely passes it on.

Android:

Go to Settings

Search for ‘Emergency alerts’ in the search bar

Turn off alerts for ‘Extreme threats’ and ‘Severe threats’ by tapping the toggle button – blue means ‘on’ and grey means ‘off’.

The author found this to be most helpful for turning of all emergency alerts that his phone (with Android 8.1.0) was capable of relaying and that he was under the misapprehension shouldn’t be. Previous searching through menu browsing did not find these setting switches that therefore appear to be otherwise hidden from the user. His, by the way, was a list of ticks that needed to be unchecked, and not toggle buttons.

And while unticking all the boxes on the particular page that the search takes one to, one might notice a disclaimer to inform that “Presidential alerts are always displayed”. Thus the legal fiction that squats from Washington D.C. on the Commonwealth in North America gives itself power that its senior London equivalent won’t in the British Isles. The idea of a “land of the free and the home of the brave” is nation-creation mythology, and the episode provides an excuse to recommend some further reading.
